Two new reviews of SHELLEY by

The Shelley Winters Project - The Shelley
Winters Project
Imagine if David Gray recorded himself years
ago on old 78’s and played them for
audiences today. That’s the first impression
you get while listening to the album opener,
“Don’t Know What I’d Do”.
These Boston natives write imaginative modern
rock tunes that have roots in practically
everything known as American music—Americana,
roots rock, blues, funk, and even a bit of
old school punk rock. I stumbled across this
band quite by accident when looking up Shelley
Winters in Google. I was instantly impressed
and you will too. Despite the fact that this
album is almost four years old, the sound
is fresh while Rick Berlin’s vocals
remind of late ‘80’s rockers.
Good stuff and check out that funky disco
beat on “Blood” that could have
made its way on the “Scarface”
soundtrack easily.

The Shelley Winters Project - I Hate
Everything But You
With their self-titled 2000 EP well behind
them, The Shelley Winters Project looked to
2002. They penned one helluva full-length
follow-up. I can’t get over how unique
Rick Berlin’s voice is. The complementary
tones of his slightly nasal country-flecked
vocals enrich the eclectic tunes that bounce
from one genre to the next while never seeming
forced. The gazillion loads of guest musicians
shows the excitement of working with this
band, I imagine there was a sign-up sheet
that was filled within minutes by excited
musicians who just wanted to ride a bit of
their coattails. I absolutely adore the horn
arrangement on “Xmas Face” and
you can tell that producer David Minehan had
an excellent time working on this album. Go
pick this up as well as their EP—you
won’t regret it.
